They Did It! (For the First Time in 25 Years!)

Two times in my life, there has been an attempt to have a surprise party for my birthday. Both times, someone let the cat our of the bag, or I suspected it. Sometime shortly after we were married, I told my husband this, so this year, he decided that he had to plan a party that would surprise me.

Monday was an interesting day at school, and I had many things to do when I got home. So, as I walked in the door with my arms full, my mind was on fixing supper quickly so that I could get busy. I had noticed my brother’s car in the parking lot of the factory across the road,  but since that is where he used to work,  (he was switched to the factory in the next town over) I figured he had been transferred back. I opened the door and heard, “Surprise!”

And boy, was I surprised. My birthday is today, and I wasn’t expecting anything more than a special meal with Jason. The house was covered with decorations, and my whole family was there. (Even Charity’s boyfriend who teaches at the same school as I do.)

The decorations were banners that Mom had made with all my different nick-names, tissue paper roses, Valentine’s garland, and balloons.

My  husband is the only person who calls me Beth on a regular basis. It is kind of his pet name for me, and I like it bunches, just like I like him!

Bethany Rose is my full name. My parents named me that because Bethany was a place where Jesus loved to be and a rose is a sweet smelling flower. They wanted me to have a name that really meant something. They wanted my personality to reflect my name.

This is my daddy’s nick-name for me. When I was little, people often commented that I looked like a baby doll, but he was the only one who could get away with calling me that. I have always been a daddy’s girl.

My Ukrainian brother and sister call me this. It is pronounced beef-any. I don’t remember exactly how this name got started. In Ukrainian, my name is Beefania, so maybe this was kind of a Ukrainian-English mix, like many other things in my life.

I was Eeyore to all my family. When I was young, I could find the bad in any situation. As I have grown older, I can still find the bad, but I choose to focus on the good instead. Nonetheless, Eeyore is my favorite Winnie-the-Pooh character.

This name comes from my older brother Andy. When he was 2 or 3 years old, he walked out of his high chair and broke out his front teeth. Because of this, he could not pronounce my name correctly, and this is what he said instead. This is the nick-name that has stuck the longest and is still used today.

Jason surprised me with this beautiful store-bought cake. I don’t remember ever having a store-bought cake for my birthday, so this was special also.

And to finish off this post, here are a couple of pictures of the beautiful dozen Valentine’s Day/Birthday roses my husband got me this year.  Aren’t they beautiful? I am so blessed to have such a thoughtful and considerate husband!

What about you? Did anyone ever totally surprise you? I’d love to hear about it.
