Writing Prompt 6-4-09

Mama Kat over at Mama's Losin' It gives weekly writing prompts on her blog. I have read manyother people's responses to her prompts, and decided to start trying it myself this week. Head over there to read what other people have to say. The prompt that I chose for this week is. . . If you could change career paths now and be anything you wanted to be...what would you be and why?

When I was very young, I told my mother that when I grew up I was going to be a missionary, a teacher, a nurse, and a mother. I was going to live in another country, teach Sunday School on Sunday, have five or six children, teach them during the day, and work night shifts at the hospital! Through the years, some of those ambitions fell by the wayside. I realized that I did not have the intestinal fortitude for a career in nursing. I learned that one can be a missionary wherever they are.
I studied for four years, completed my student teaching, and began teaching at the school from which I graduated. I love teaching, and frequently tell people that it is my dream job. However, deep in my heart, there is one career which I would prefer over teaching. It is the other one of my childhood goals.
I want to be a mommy. I would ditch my teaching career in a heartbeat if I could have the honor of raising my own dear child. I have prepared my entire life for this career. I started when I was very young as I helped my mother care for my younger siblings. Since there were three younger brothers and two younger sisters, she needed all the help that she could get. When I was 12, I babysat for another missionary family on a regular basis. They had four children ranging in age from 1-9. I loved spending time with them, cleaning the house, and teaching them about what was important in life. Now that I am teaching, I am nurturing students every day.
None of this preparation however can compare to the joy of holding my own child in my arms. That is the career that I most long for. Motherhood calls to me daily, and my ears are listening, my heart is burning, and my arms are outstretched, waiting for the day when God chooses to bless me with the best career I could ever have!

  1. Good Morning, Bethany! Great topic and sweet response. Praying God will bring a little one to you soon :)

  2. Good luck in becoming a mommy. It's tough but rewarding. Teaching does prepare you to multitask as a mommy but that's about it! Everything else you do as a mom comes for your heart.

    You'll make a great mom!

Thanks for sharing and happy Thursday!
